The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) is delighted to formally introduce Dr. Julie Minbiole as the next Editor-in-Chief of its award-winning journal, The American Biology Teacher, fondly known to NABT members as ABT.

In the words of NABT’s 2026 President, Dr. Vedham Karpakakunjaram, “this transition in editorial leadership marks a pivotal moment — one in which Julie's vision and expertise will help chart new directions aligned with the evolving landscape of science education, while honoring the standards and expectations the journal’s readership has come to value.”
Dr. Minbiole’s editorial perspective is informed by her doctoral research in neurobiology, which focused on the regulation of synapse receptor abundance during embryonic development; her work with students at Columbia College Chicago, where she is Associate Professor in the School of Design; and her service to The American Biology Teacher, where she is currently a reviewing editor and the cover editor until her official promotion on October 1, 2026.
In addition to peer-reviewed papers highlighting her scientific research, Dr. Minbiole has published and presented extensively on strategies for incorporating novel pedagogical interventions and improving course design to promote engagement and success of non-STEM majors, particularly through increasing scientific literacy.
“The quality of work published in ABT has been consistently exceptional,” explains Dr. Minbiole. “However, with recent disruptions in the two- and four-year college funding and enrollment, ongoing challenges and changes to tenure, and uncertainty about federal and state support for K-12 education, there is a broad conversation reexamining who leads and who matters in educational policy, curriculum, and instruction.” Dr. Minbiole is excited to contribute to ABT’s ongoing excellence through expanded authorship and mentorship opportunities, helping the journal continue to foster impactful dialogue that reflects the work of education researchers and classroom practitioners in a rapidly changing landscape. |
“ABT has been our flagship journal since the founding of NABT, and each change in editorial leadership has provided an opportunity to consider new directions to fineātune the journal so that the next generation of biology educators will be as well served as those in the past. This is particularly true as we approach our centenary, and we will be in excellent hands with Julie leading the way,” shared outgoing ABT Editor-in-Chief, Dr. William McComas.
We welcome Dr. Minbiole as the next Editor-in-Chief of The American Biology Teacher and are thankful for her work in stewarding the journal to meet this moment for our community and our students.
