Brockport High School, Brockport, NY
I have been a secondary science teacher for thirty-six years. I have never stopped going to school, since kindergarten. I attended SUNY Brockport and SUNY Potsdam where I obtained permanent
teaching certificates in Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Science. I am the Environmental Club Advisor for Brockport High School. Over the years, the students and I have developed a floating
classroom on Lake Ontario, constructed the Robert A. Ellis Nature Trail, participated in Trout in the Classroom, raised butterflies through Monarch Watch and started a recycle program at our
school. My affiliations of professional interests include being a member of Defenders of Wildlife, Arbor Day Foundation and Nature Conservancy.
My philosophy as a Biology Teacher is to instill in students the ability to use their minds to gain an appreciation for the natural world around them. I believe that all students have the
ability to learn if they are willing to receive knowledge and training that I have to offer. To do this in the classroom, I have found that it is the attitude that I display that sets the
tone for learning. I am most passionate about creating an environment of integrity inside and outside the classroom that teaches students responsibility and high standards. Students must be
given the foundation to be able to reach out and focus on careers that impact and make a difference in the lives of others.

teaching.
Montgomery Bell Academy, Nashville, TN
In reflecting on my 40 years of teaching Science in Middle Tennessee, it seems that the discipline of Biology continues to get better and better. I have taught Biology for each and every year
since 1974. The science has changed dramatically over the years, from a mainly descriptive science to a molecular and inquiry-based study. We do labs, successfully, that biologists were
earning Nobel prizes for in the 1970’s. Bacterial transformations using foreign DNA, DNA fingerprinting, and measuring oxygen concentrations to a few parts per million were unheard of
in high school labs 40 years ago. Now, they are routine. I fell in love with Biology, the study and science of life, as a child helping in my father’s veterinary clinic. Vanderbilt
University was the perfect place for me to learn about the connections that evolutionary Biology provides for all of life. People like Stephen Gould and Sean Carroll have given me hours of
joy. That infatuation continues today, in the awe and wonder of the natural world.

Lockport Middle School, Raceland, LA
I recall the first time I observed a specimen through a microscope. That single classroom experience ignited a curiosity and a passion to know more about life sciences in general. It was
moments like those that inspired me to become a life science teacher.
My teaching career began at Raceland Middle School where I taught life science for 3.5 years. My next 7 years were spent teaching at Lockport Middle School. There I taught life science,
sponsored the Science Club, served as department chair, and coordinated annual science fairs. Using the guided discovery approach, it has been rewarding to watch my students become interested
in the scientific world around and within them year after year.
I seek professional development and collaboration opportunities through affiliations such as Louisiana Science Teachers Association and the National Science Teachers Association. With these
affiliations, I attended and presented at conferences. Currently, I am a member of the National Biology Teachers Association.
In 2012, I was awarded Middle School Teacher of the year for Lafourche Parish. Last year, I earned my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University. There I
was invited into the Arkansas State Chapter Golden Key International Honor Society. Very recently, I have accepted a position as the Administrative Assistant at Bayou Blue Middle School.
Although, I am not in the classroom daily, I will always be a life science teacher. I plan on teaching and being very involved in the science classrooms and with teachers.
Hancock High School, Kiln, MS
For twenty-four years, I have been a life science teacher, fostering a love and passion for the learning community and successfully integrating many educational programs including Sea
Scholars, Maury Project, NSF EPSCoR, and Project MAST into my curriculum. Among my educational accomplishments are National Board Teaching Standard Certification and recertification, a
master’s degree in Science Education, and over one hundred hours striving to complete a PhD program.
As an incorporative teacher, I address the question, “How does that affect me?” Data analysis programs such as “Adopt a Stream” allow students to gain experiences and
skills for higher-order thinking. My personal experiences of snorkeling in the Bahamas, swimming with Manatees in Florida, and beach combing in Haiti enhance my educational programs and
lessons. My hopes are to begin a cultural shift toward an awareness and responsibility of our environment.

Science is about doing: observing, thinking, questioning, touching, manipulating, researching, conducting, analyzing, concluding, reflecting, repeat -scientific inquiry. I love science,
especially, the biological sciences. My passion for science is so great, I want my students to have it too. I try to inspire my students with a desire to find out ‘why?’- and hope
they will develop their own passion about science too. My goal is that my students-future voters, parents, global citizens, and maybe a few science professionals- will become critical
thinkers and problem-solvers who evaluate the data and make sound decisions based on scientific fact.
This is my 20th year in biological education and I’m still learning too!
