Since being established in 1938, the National Association of Biology Teachers has been a volunteer-led organization, with members selecting the leaders of our community from our
community.
It is now time to elect the next leaders of NABT. In accordance with the NABT Constitution &
Bylaws of the association, the NABT Nominating Committee has put forward a slate of candidates for the following NABT Offices:

All NABT members in good standing are eligible to participate in online voting using the link that was provided via email. Please contact the NABT Office if you did not receive your
ballot.
The entire process should take only a few minutes. All votes must be cast by Thursday, October 1, 2026, in order to be counted and certified by the NABT Board of Directors.

Personal Statement:
The President-Elect must be able to collaborate, compromise, and engage members through clear communication and quiet leadership. My experience teaching in both public and private schools, coupled with my various board leadership roles, has prepared me to serve in this capacity.
My experience as a Board Member for both NABT and NCSE has provided me with institutional knowledge critical to continuing to move each organization forward in their missions to serve science educators. As a member of various College Board committees, I have served as a passionate advocate for students and teachers while sharpening my skills as a collegial collaborator, open to new ideas and points of view, leading to compromise benefiting more constituencies. As a longtime development volunteer for Southwestern University’s Alumni Association, I recognize the importance of a strong stewardship program rooted in participation by those who were first served by the institution: its alumni. In this role, I have been able to engage fellow alumni through encouraging them to make annual gifts, attend alumni events, and remain connected to the university. As President-Elect, I can bring this same fire to NABT to retain and recruit members, and help shore up our organization’s financial future.
Personal Statement of Goals and Vision:
The most powerful thing a leader can do is to empower others and nurture their capacity to lead. NABT does this by “empowering educators to provide the best biology and life science education for all students” (NABT Mission, 2022). If I am chosen as President-Elect, I will continue my service to NABT as a Board Member who strives to ensure that our organization provides the resources and support educators need to give students a life science education grounded in evidence-based science. I believe that by providing educators with the tools they need to deliver the science education their students deserve, we empower them to be science education leaders in their communities. Our country is at a critical point in its history during which the importance of teaching evidence-based science cannot be overstated. NABT is uniquely positioned to support life science educators in their endeavor to build critical thinking skills and an accurate understanding of life science content in their students. As President-Elect, I will work with the Board toward these three key goals that will help NABT to continue providing the professional learning opportunities and support educators need.
As the NABT President-Elect, I will work toward these goals to strengthen the organization’s health, to serve every educator-member, and to advocate for the teaching of evidence-based science. I believe our nation’s educators and students deserve it.

Thank you for the nomination for Director-at-Large. My journey with NABT started 17 years ago after I received the Michigan Outstanding Biology Teacher Award in 2008 and was asked to serve as the state's OBTA Director. Looking back, I had no idea how much this community would shape my career or the lifelong friendships it would cultivate. Since 2015, I have been presenting at the NABT national conference ? my favorite professional development event of the year! Presenting evolved naturally from my love of educational writing, which has led me to author resources for over a dozen organizations. Sharing these creations at the NABT conference annually is incredibly rewarding, allowing me to extend impact to classrooms nationwide. I am also the advisor to a successful NABT BioClub where my students compete in biology competitions and university-partnered research in my classroom after school.
Over the years, seeing the rise of science skepticism has deepened my commitment to standing up for science education. What began for me as national ambassadorships for climate and evolution organizations has grown into partnerships with globally-connected institutions like the Smithsonian and the Pulitzer Center. These experiences have provided me a broader perspective, focusing on advocacy and action-oriented solutions. They have expanded my own teachings to shift emphasis to place-based, evidence-based, and equitable practices, helping me to inspire a genuine, lifelong love for science in my students.
If elected, I am excited to channel this blend of deep roots within NABT and my diverse educational experiences directly into serving our membership. My priority will be to ensure that NABT remains a leader for life science educators on the ground, while actively equipping biology teachers with practical, innovative tools to navigate modern classroom challenges.

Personal Statement:
The community of teachers in the National Association of Biology Teachers is second to none. The connections, ideas, support, and opportunities I have found through NABT have helped shape me into the educator I am today and continually challenge me to grow and improve the experiences I provide for my students. As NABT Region IV Coordinator and Director-Coordinator, I have worked to maintain and grow that community, and I want to continue that work as Director-at-Large.
I truly love providing opportunities for teachers to build community and grow alongside one another as we strive to provide the best education possible for our students. As Kansas Director for the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA), I have had the privilege of celebrating outstanding biology educators and helping deepen their connection with NABT. Through the Kansas Association of Biology Teachers, I have organized conferences, field trips, and informal gatherings that provide opportunities for educators to connect and learn from one another. I also facilitate a monthly statewide New Science Teacher Professional Learning Community (PLC) and previously served as a Science Professional Development Leader for Olathe Public Schools, collaborating to plan and deliver professional learning for biology and science teachers.
My experiences have reinforced my belief that professional service is all about community. As Director-at-Large, I want to help NABT grow while maintaining the community that makes it a beacon of guidance, energy, and connection for biology educators.

Personal Statement:
I am a veteran teacher committed to not only providing my students with a high level of instruction, but working with other teachers and educational organizations to raise the level of biology instruction across the country. Through NABT I discovered a community of passionate, committed, and talented educators and scientists committed to benefitting its members, their students, and the community at-large. I was encouraged to embark on my doctoral studies in part because of the support from my friends in NABT. I was able to apply my experiences with NABT into my coursework, and even presented one of my studies at the NABT Research Symposium in 2023.
Attending the NABT conferences and serving as an evaluator for the OBTA in my role as Regional Coordinator reminds me of the tremendous and passionate educators we have in our community. I walk away from every experience with a renewed and replenished spirit for teaching and advocating for biology instruction.
As a part of the NABT community, I have made some of my best friends, found people I can rely on for professional expertise for both teaching and science content, and discovered a go-to circle of individuals who strive to constantly improve themselves and their practice. I have presented at APAC, NABT and NSTA national conferences, as well as conducted workshops for school districts and community colleges. Through these outreach experiences, I am reminded of how important communities like NABT are to fostering and supporting science education. I look forward to extending the influence of NABT throughout Region V.

When I started as a full-time biology instructor, I searched everywhere for support. I wanted my classes to be engaging with lots of hand-on activities, but struggled to find other with that mindset. Then I found NABT. Not only did I find NABT, but the Regional Coordinator at the time, Kim Sadler, emailed me about a meetup for TNABT happening at that year’s conference in San Diego. Through NABT and TNABT, I found like-minded educators that helped feed that spark and passion I had. That passion has continued to grow and gets brighter after each conference. Through my positions of District VI Director for NSTA and District IV Board of Director for TSTA, I was/am able to magnify the voices of science educators throughout Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. I greatly enjoy that, but I want to put my focus more on biology. To that end, I joined the executive board of TNABT as Vice President to help support biology teachers in TN. I want to use the position of Regional Coordinator to continue that goal of helping those teachers who, like me, are searching for support. Who are looking for resources, like-minded individuals, and help locating that spark.
