Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, Acton, MA
I teach biology at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in Acton Massachusetts, where I have taught since 2000. My teaching philosophy is that students need to engage in the process of science to learn biology. This means students need to perform labs where they ask the questions driving their experiments and/or choose the materials they use to conduct experiments. During my 20-year teaching career I have taught biology (including AP), bioethics, chemistry, physics, astronomy, forensics, and environmental science. I received my B.S. in Biology (1996) and M.Ed. (1997) from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In 2006, I completed my National Board Professional Teaching certification. Outside the classroom, I have worked as a mentor, a facilitator, and a facilitator coordinator for the eMentoring for Student Success (eMSS) program. The eMSS program is an online mentoring program that pairs new and veteran teachers for content and pedagogical support.

Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy, Pittsburgh, PA
I received my B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in molecular and cellular biology in 1991 and my PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997. I focused on cancer research for almost 18 years before pursuing and obtaining my teaching certification in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh department of Education. I began my secondary education teaching career at SciTech in 2009 where I presently teach. Why did I become a teacher after 18 years of a fairly successful research career? I never had those mentors when I was growing up. I always loved math and science and had the thought of going to medical school. However, when I didn’t get in on my first try, I had no “plan B”. I didn’t have teacher or mentor encouraging me to take advantage of opportunities or helping me acquire the tools to succeed in my goal. I went into research and fell in love with the challenges of the basic research. However, that nagging was still there as I saw students come through the lab with experiences that I never knew existed. I wanted to help young people have more opportunities and more choices so I found out what I had to do to become a teacher and I did it. Now, I actively collaborate with local academic and corporate partners to enhance opportunities for high school students throughout the Pittsburgh district.

My research on the biological control of insect pests of corn was published in a number of scientific journals. Every day I strive for each of my students to grow as critical thinkers and problem solvers, to become life-long learners of biology, and to be curious about the natural world around them. I hope that my passion for biology is contagious and continues to spread through each of my students long after high school graduation.
